We know that after a long, tiring day, you just want to have a decent meal and a good night’s sleep. But before you doze off, have you thought of how much dirt your face has accumulated throughout the day? With the hustle and bustle of commuting around the metro and the multitude of vehicles emitting smokes which contain harmful chemicals, doesn’t your skin deserve to be duly treated at the end of the day? You may be thinking, “Nah, sleep is much greater than skincare” but on the other hand, you’ve always wanted to have that flawless, “chok chok” skin like your favorite Korean celebrities and idols, right? You can achieve that by starting to step up your skincare routine by incorporating the double cleansing method.

Considered to be the most crucial and important part which you should NEVER EVER skip, the double cleansing method basically involves washing your face using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser. These first two steps aim to thoroughly cleanse your skin for better absorption of succeeding skincare and/or make-up products and to minimize the appearance of breakouts.

Step 1: Oil-based cleanser.

Oil-based cleansers are designed to help remove all oil-based products in our skin such as make-up, excess sebum, sunscreen, as well as billion particles of pollutants. Hence, this step is also for those who don’t wear anything on their face at all! It is best to consider a mild yet effective oil-based cleanser in removing makeup and dirt without causing irritation.

You may opt to use the typical cleansing oil like the Dear Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil which is composed of natural oils extracted from Black Bean Oil, Black Sesame Oil, and Black Currant Seed Oil. Known to control sebum production, black bean oil provides a soothing effect on the skin while black sesame oil is a powerful antioxidant. Another key ingredient of this cleansing oil from Dear Klairs is the black currant seed oil which promotes skin cell regeneration. With hypo-allergenic formula, it is great for those with sensitive skin.

Another option would be cleansing balms such as the ever-famous Heimish All Clean Balm, a paraben-free and hypoallergenic sherbet-type cleanser that transforms into a silky oil cleanser when applied onto dry skin, and then turns to a milky consistency while you rinse. Lightweight in texture, this best-selling first cleanser from Heimish equally breaks down oil-based debris and doesn’t strip off the skin’s natural oils. It is also rich in shea butter and coconut extract which deeply moisturizes and makes the skin supple. Its new formulation also includes donkey milk which has anti-aging and anti-bacterial properties.

Step 2: Water-based cleanser.

This second step eliminates water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt. It is worthy to consider using a water-based cleanser that is SLS (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate)-free, a foaming agent which may cause skin irritation.

A great choice for this step would be the much-raved-about product from COSRX, the Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser which is packed with botanical ingredients such as Saccharomyces ferment and tea tree leaf oil which gently exfoliates dead skin cells and treats blemishes. A holy grail for almost everyone and the most reviewed product here at Go Bloom & Glow, it is good for all skin types, including sensitive skin!

Another good choice would be from the cruelty-free brand Pyunkang Yul. Developed by the renowned Pyunkang Oriental Medicine Clinic in Korea, Pyunkang Yul Cleansing Foam is made with ledebouriella seseloides extract and holds mighty power in deeply cleaning the skin and clearing it out of dirt and oil. It leaves the skin feeling smooth and hydrated even after cleansing.

Dealing with breakouts? COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Cleanser is formulated with 0.5% salicylic acid which helps reduce pimples. It gently removes impurities and controls excess sebum to promote clearer skin.

Now, after knowing what double cleansing is, the next question would be, “Why is it necessary to double cleanse?”. Well, aside from it can be soothing and relaxing while doing the routine per se, simply put, the main reason why it is important is that it elevates cleansing on a higher level. It’s not always enough to only cleanse your face with a water-based cleanser as it cannot fully remove sunscreen and makeup given that water and oil don’t mix together. In the same manner, you cannot use an oil-based cleanser alone. Our face needs both types of cleansers to thoroughly purify our skin because a skin that isn’t properly cleansed can be the root cause of a lot of skincare dilemmas which are just too heartbreaking to enumerate. You should also remember that a well-cleaned face also serves as a great canvas for easy makeup application, and a good preparation for the succeeding steps in your skincare routine as proper double cleansing will lead to deeper product absorption which will consequently result to better product efficacy.

Hence, whenever you feel too lazy to move, just imagine how your skin would weep because of the gazillion amount of dirt sitting on your skin and clogging your pores… gross, isn’t it? So do not forget to do yourself a favor and take a further step in your skincare regimen by double cleansing. Believe me, your skin will thank you.
